Description
The Standby Man is responsible for remaining alert and positioned at designated work areas such as tanks, confined spaces, or hazardous zones to monitor ongoing activities. The main purpose of this role is to ensure the safety of workers inside restricted environments and to respond immediately in case of emergency situations. This job is critical in industrial plants where entry into confined spaces requires continuous supervision and strict adherence to safety protocols. The Standby Man ensures that all safety procedures are followed and that communication between workers inside and outside the confined area is maintained at all times.
Key Responsibilities
The Standby Man is required to continuously monitor personnel working in confined spaces such as storage tanks and industrial vessels. This includes maintaining communication with workers inside the space and ensuring all safety signals and procedures are strictly followed. The role involves checking safety equipment before work begins, assisting in emergency evacuation procedures if required, and ensuring that no unauthorized entry occurs in hazardous zones. Additionally, the Standby Man must remain at the assigned post throughout the shift and immediately report any unsafe condition or emergency situation to the site supervisor or safety team.
Skills and Knowledge
A qualified Standby Man must have strong awareness of industrial safety procedures, especially confined space entry protocols. Experience in oil, gas, or construction environments is highly preferred. The candidate should be familiar with safety equipment usage, emergency response techniques, and communication protocols during hazardous operations. Physical fitness and alertness are essential, as the role requires long hours of observation and quick response in emergency situations. Holding valid safety training certifications or confined space entry authorization is considered a strong advantage for this position.
