The Safety Officer role is a critical position within industrial and oil & gas projects, ensuring that all workplace activities are conducted in full compliance with safety regulations and company standards. In projects like AKS General Contracting Company in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, Safety Officers play a vital role in protecting workers, equipment, and overall site operations. Their main purpose is to minimize risks, prevent accidents, and maintain a safe working environment in high-risk industrial areas such as Sabic and Petrokemya facilities. This position is especially important in shutdown and maintenance projects where strict safety control is required. The role also ensures that all operations follow international HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) guidelines, making it a key pillar in the success of any large-scale construction or industrial project.

 Key Responsibilities

The Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring daily site activities and ensuring that all workers strictly follow safety procedures. Duties include conducting safety inspections, identifying hazards, and immediately reporting unsafe conditions to management. The officer must ensure that all workers use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and follow permit-to-work systems, especially in oil and gas plant environments. Another major responsibility is conducting safety briefings and toolbox talks to educate workers about risks and preventive measures. The Safety Officer also plays a key role in emergency response planning and ensuring that fire safety, evacuation routes, and first aid systems are always ready and functional. Regular coordination with supervisors, engineers, and subcontractors is also required to maintain a safe working environment.

 Skills and Knowledge

A qualified Safety Officer must have strong knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, especially in industrial and oil & gas sectors. Experience in Sabic or Petrokemya authorization environments is highly preferred. The candidate should understand risk assessment techniques, hazard identification, and incident reporting procedures. Good communication skills are essential to effectively deliver safety instructions to workers from different nationalities. Basic computer skills for reporting and documentation are also required. Certification in safety management or NEBOSH is considered an advantage. Previous experience in room-to-room duty and large industrial shutdown projects is highly valuable for this role.
